In early November, I had the opportunity to spend some time photographing William Intriligator, the music director and conductor for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, as he prepared for a concert featuring violin soloist Miriam Fried. The photos were for a “day in the life” type of story so I spent time with the conductor back stage before and during a rehearsal for the performance. It was pretty amazing to get the opportunity to hear Fried perform pieces from the Brahms Violin Concerto to absolute perfection on her first attempt as she had an informal meeting with Intriligator before a full-orchestra rehearsal.

Had the opportunity to shoot a few portraits of local blues guitarist Taylor Scott for the paper’s weekly “Plains People” feature. I had a bit of time to scout locations and work the portraits. As a result, the portraits turned out well. Amazing how that happens. Scott, who is an 18-year-old senior at Cheyenne’s Central High School, was pretty cool and easy to work with on the shoot. Being that I’m a huge fan of the blues, it was easy to strike up a conversation with him on the shoot as we talked about Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Eric Clapton among others. If you haven’t heard him, check him out playing with his group, Another Kind of Magick.

Scott, who owns 12 guitars, is set to record a live album with his group on Nov. 11 at The Plains Hotel in downtown Cheyenne.

My two main responsibilities today were to shoot trick riders at the rodeo followed by shooting an evening performance by the Zac Brown Band. They’re a neat group with high energy. Zac Brown himself played like a man possessed at times as you can see in the photo below.

Today is my last day as an intern. Next week, I start as a staff photographer at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As I finish up a few housekeeping things at the office today, I though I’d take a look back at a few of my favorite images from my internship in Peoria. It’s been an interesting experience, but I’m glad to be done and headed off to start my first full-time job next week. It’ll be a busy few days as I scramble to move to Wyoming, but I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted with a few pictures along the way.

It seems like I end up photographing concerts and musicians quite often. In Austin it was pretty typical since the city is the Mecca of live music. But I have been surprised to have the opportunity to photograph a number of shows here in Peoria as well. I’ve found that it’s something I truly enjoy, and it would certainly be a dream job to be able to photograph musicians for a living. On my day off this week, I put together a music portfolio. Here are a few frames from that portfolio:

Something pretty cool happened to me Saturday night. And by cool I mean awesome. My assignment on Saturday was to cover Weezer’s performance over at Bradley University for the Peoria Journal Star. I kind of figured I’d be way in the back with a telephoto lens if it’s like most concerts I photograph. That wasn’t the case. I had to run back to my car and get different lenses after the guy at will call said I’d be up in front of the stage (in the buffer as we call it). I ended up shooting everything with a 24 mm lens since I was so close. At one point Rivers Cuomo, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, leans over me and calls for my camera as he’s singing. I handed it over to him and he shot a few shots of the crowd and a couple of me down in the buffer. I grew up listening to Weezer, which made it really cool. Below is the sequence including a couple of his crowd shots (the photo of me should be at the end of the sequence):

I had the privileged this evening of photographing the Peoria Symphony Orchestra as they opened their season with a new conductor, George Stelluto. The orchestra’s public relations guy was extremely helpful, getting me back stage before the performance to get a shot of the maestro as he was preparing to walk out for his first performance with the orchestra (first and third photos). I absolutely love it when I get this kind of access, and it makes for better photos about 98 percent of the time.
