Hell on Wheels and a Holga

By James Brosher | Posted at 9:30 am on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 | Share | Comments (0)

A few weeks back, I photographed Hell on Wheels, a shooting competition where participants from around the world dress in Old West costumes and fire weapons from the Old West. Given the period costumes, I couldn’t resist firing off a couple rolls on my Holga. (Click on a thumbnail below to view a larger image.)

Stormtroopers, old cars, Wyoming and a Holga

By James Brosher | Posted at 9:58 pm on Monday, July 11, 2011 | Share | Comments (0)

I’ve gotten to the point where I carry two Holgas with me everyday to work: one loaded with 100 ASA film and one loaded with 400 ASA film. The results are negatives full of random, in-between moments from my daily newspaper assignments. Here is the latest edition on what is slowly becoming a regular feature on my blog. Holga frames from Wyoming

By James Brosher | Posted at 10:00 am on Monday, April 25, 2011 | Share | Comments (0)

This weekend I finally got the first two rolls of film from Wyoming processed and scanned. I’ve been a bit off my game since I moved out because I’ve only shot two rolls. Now that I’m starting to get settled in at my new gig here, I’m hoping to shoot more using my Holga. I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping it in my truck at all times, and I bought a second body so I can have two different types of film ready depending on the weather and exposure outside. I made some modifications to the Holga before loading the second roll. I removed the 6×6 mask inside the camera to allow for increased vignetting and a more imperfect picture. You can see the results of this in the edges of the second frame below.

Holga in the heartland

By James Brosher | Posted at 3:07 pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 | Share | Comments (0)

Here’s the latest installment in my occasional toy camera musings. These are a few frames I took while I was home in Indiana between my internships in Austin and Peoria, Ill. I haven’t had a chance to shoot any film yet in Peoria, but with the harvest season approaching, I’ll have to make an effort to do so.

Texas through a plastic lens

By James Brosher | Posted at 9:50 pm on Saturday, August 28, 2010 | Share | Comments (2)

During my summer internship in Austin, I carried a loaded Holga with me in my car to most of my assignments. Whenever I saw something weird or interesting, I shot a few frames with the plastic camera. I also used it whenever I had the urge to take touristy photos while I was in Texas. Today I picked up the last roll from my trip after having it processed here in Peoria. I know the Holga is thought of as a trendy hipster camera, but I like to use it to get back to basics. You can’t chimp on a Holga, and you have to understand exposures to use the thing. It’s the photographic equivalent of recording an album on a 4-track.

Europe through a plastic lens

Recently I discovered a more efficient way to post my square Holga shots to a blog designed for horizontals: Flickr. I never really got into Flickr until now. I’m using it as a way to build flash-based galleries of my Holga shots, which a plugin formats into nice columns. If you saw my original posts with the photos, you’ll notice a few new additions that I scanned more recently.
