As is the case at a lot of newspapers across the country, our photo staff is being pushed to do more and more video projects. It’s been a bit of a learning on the fly situation for me as I had not shot video previously at my last job or on internships after college. When I first started at the Tribune last February, my videos were not very good, but I’ve been trying to push myself to increase both the quality and visual sophistication of my “quick hit” videos. Earlier this week, I recorded Anaya Jolie performing a couple of her original songs for a feature to run in our Sunday paper. While this isn’t exactly a polished MTV music video (they still show music videos right?), it’s a big more visual than our usual videos. For the first time I used video lights and more than one Canon 7D to shoot details as she performed. Baby steps … baby steps.

Indiana fired women’s basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack on Monday after six seasons coaching the Hoosiers. As a student at IU, I shot a lot of women’s hoops as it was a way to work your way up to men’s hoops at the Indiana Daily Student. I shot the women so much so that it contributed to my getting a C in Z301: Rock Music in the 70s & 80s. The class was on Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. – the same time as several of the women’s games. Coach Jack was fun to photograph during the games because she was always good for a reaction either good or bad depending on how the team was doing.

Wednesday was a leap day, but for two of my best friends it’s something a little more special. For Larry and Erin, Feb. 29, 2012 was their wedding day. As I joked, Larry planned the whole thing out so he only has to buy flowers for Erin once every four years. I wanted to send out another heartfelt congratulations to my beautiful friends with a frame of them I shot a couple years back at the German Christkindlmarkt in Chicago. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan!

I had a few hours to kill early in my shift on Tuesday before a high school basketball game so I set out to shoot a few features. Tuesday was Fat Tuesday, but the only Mardi Gras-related feature I found was a couple local musicians performing some New Orleans-style jazz at Chicory Cafe, a French Quarter-style coffee shop in downtown South Bend. After I returned to the newsroom, a reporter tipped me off that he spotted a barbershop mural going up out on the west side of town.

Isaro Simental adds green to the word "side" as he and Sammy Aguire, background, paint a mural on the side of the Little Mexico West Side Barbershop on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, along Western Avenue in South Bend. Simental, who is also a barber at the shop, and Aguire had been working on the mural for about two hours by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, but had already completed a barber's pole that spanned the height of the building's east side. The two said they usually only perform at the cafe for Mardi Gras, and this year's performance was the third such occasion. "It's fun to do a duo," Barber said of the performance. "You just come in and play." (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)
