This week as I reworked some galleries on my site, I ran across the Holga photo below. I immediately recognized that I had photographed the same truck at the same annual car show this past September. I guess I have a thing for flames.

Now that winter has arrived in Bloomington, I’m immediately thinking back to our warm summer. A few months ago, I received several rolls of film back from the lab. These rolls contained miscellaneous photos I had shot over the course of the summer from farmer’s markets, family visits and hikes at the lake. Here are a few of my favorites:

Last month I spent some time one afternoon photographing Debbie and Phil Carter at their farm in rural Vigo County, Indiana not far from Terre Haute for The New York Times. The article told the story of some people who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act’s regulations in regards to pre-existing conditions. Thanks to health care changes made under the ACA – also known as “Obamacare” – Debbie received a liver transplant after being diagnosed with a bile duct disease. Because of rain, the Carters were working in their barn for most of the time I was with them. After I finished shooting, I chatted with them for close to an hour. I grew up in a rural farming community in Indiana, but I hadn’t photographed on a farm in several years. It was a nice change of pace to get out in the country away from Bloomington and Indianapolis for a shoot.

I spent the weekend in Gas City, Indiana with my parents and my fiancé at the 20th annual Ducktail Run Rod & Custom Show. The event is one of two in Grant County marking the anniversary of James Dean’s death in 1955. (Dean grew up in nearby Fairmount, Indiana). I’ve been coming to this show since I was a child. It’s a bit of a trip down memory lane to be able to come back as an adult and make a few pictures along the way. I was amazed at how much the show has grown in the last decade. On Saturday, the pedestrian-filled roads in the park deterred the participants from cruising in their classic cars. (I experienced this first hand: I drove my dad’s 1957 Chevy home on Saturday night and struggled to keep from hitting multiple pedestrians coming out of the park.) It’s still a great event – and a lot of fun to photograph – but the lack of cruising really takes something away from the show.

On the Fourth of July, I was sent out to the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair to shoot features. Quite literally the first thing I spotted after the reporter and I parked was a group of kids having an elaborate water fight in the cow wash stall. I lucked out because I didn’t realize it was a tradition for the members to have a big water fight after they are done competing. As they say, it’s better to be lucky than good. I got wet for the first frame below, but it was totally worth it.
