Earlier this week I photographed my last basketball assignment of the season. While I am disappointed to end my run as the South Bend Tribune’s designated armpit photographer, I am glad that it’s finally baseball season. After months of cold and snow, it’ll be nice to get outside to shoot a few games in the coming weeks. Oddly enough I’ve never been a die hard fan of any particular ball club – something that probably comes from growing up in MLB-less Indiana. Despite this, I really enjoy photographing it. I’m especially looking forward to baseball assignments this season after such a long, cold and basketball-filled winter.

Our staff recently upgraded to the Canon EOS-1D X. Previously, our newest sports camera was the 1D Mark III. It’s quite a huge jump, but for the past couple weeks I hadn’t had the opportunity to let it rip on a sports assignment where the 1D X really excels. I used a 1D X at the BCS National Championship Game in January, but I was itching to try it out at a baseball game where it really helps to have a quick autofocus and high frame rate.

The South Bend Silver Hawks played a rare midweek matinee on Wednesday stealing a few bases – and ultimately the victory – from the Fort Wayne TinCaps. I’ve been on quite a stretch of sports assignments at the Tribune recently, which will continue this weekend with Notre Dame’s Blue vs. Gold spring football game. After months of shooting basketball, I’m starting to dust off some rust with my baseball shooting. When you’re used to constant action in basketball, it’s a change of pace to suddenly need to summon the patience and attention it takes to photograph baseball properly.

Here’s a quick Silver Hawks media day sportrait I shot of Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Archie Bradley earlier this week. The Diamondbacks drafted him at No. 7 overall in the 2011 MLB draft, and I doubt he’s in South Bend very long before moving up. Look forward to seeing him pitch a few times this summer at the Cove.

After what seems like months shooting basketball in dark caves known as high school gymnasiums, it was very nice to get outside for a few innings to shoot a high school game at Coveleski stadium. Need to work on my timing a bit, but I’m eager to shoot some more baseball at the Cove this summer.

Photographing pitchers is kind of my safety blanket when it comes to baseball. I know if there’s nothing else going on I can usually make a decent picture of the guy on the mound. Such was the case on Wednesday when I didn’t have time to wait for a double play or some fielding action because I was also working the photo desk. I dropped down to 1/30th of a second and stuck a focus point on the pitcher’s face to ensure it would be in focus as I followed him through his motion.

Last week I spent some time photographing Cheyenne Post 6 star Brandon Nimmo for the New York Post. The New York Mets recently selected Nimmo with the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s MLB draft. Last season, he batted .448 with 15 home runs and 84 runs batted in. But he doesn’t act like it. Despite his overwhelming success in Wyoming’s legion league and his first round draft selection, he continues to be extremely humble. He addresses everyone as “sir” and continues to go about business as usual with his legion league team, Post 6. When I photographed him at his home, his family was very hospitable to Post columnist Kevin Kernan and I. What follows are a few favorites from my time with Nimmo. You can read Kevin’s column here.
