Drone views of IU vs. Purdue snow game

For the final home game of IU’s historic football season, I coordinated with the IU Athletics Department to capture aerial photos and videos of a snow-covered Memorial Stadium. This was IU’s first home night game of the season, presenting an interesting opportunity to capture the sold-out stadium after dark. The snowy weather at kickoff added another unique element to the photos. It’s not often that we have snow in Bloomington this early in the season, let alone for a football game. The game marked my third experience flying within a temporary flight restriction (TFR) after being granted a waiver from the FAA.

IU-Ohio State Football Drone

For IU’s home opener against Ohio State, I worked with the IU Athletics Department to capture aerial photos and videos of a nearly-full Memorial Stadium. This all followed an application and paperwork process with the FAA and TSA. Ultimately, I was granted a waiver allowing me to operate a drone within the temporary flight restriction (TFR) blanketing the airspace over the stadium. Some of this is outlined in a post I contributed to for the University Photographers Association of America (UPAA).

Fall at Indiana University

Without question, fall is the most picturesque season at Indiana University Bloomington. I pushed myself this season to get out on campus more than I had in the previous few years. Capturing what we call “campus scenics” is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling parts of my job. It’s an opportunity to be outdoors and make pictures of the campus at its peak visual grandeur. Scenes along U.S. Bicycle Route 235

Last month, I had the opportunity to spend a chunk of a weekend photographing the sights along Indiana USBR 235, a 120-mile leg of the U.S. Bicycle Route System between Indianapolis and Seymour, for a travel section feature in The Washington Post. This shoot was a lot of fun. Beyond a shot list of a few places to capture from the reporter, Andrea Sachs, I had the creative freedom to drive the route and make pictures. The route was gorgeous in all its peak fall foliage glory, and these photos cannot begin to do it justice. For years, I have enjoyed riding several of the roads along this route. This was a neat chance to combine a couple of my passions – photography and cycling – to showcase some of these hidden gems to a national audience.

In recent months, I have had a few opportunities to drone in downtown Indianapolis. This is thanks in part to my work as a photographer for Indiana University as well as in a freelance capacity.
