Back in August, I photographed a few of Indiana University’s Olympic swimmers after they returned home from the Rio games. I had the opportunity to shoot their portraits for IU social media after a media day availability. Our social media folks were looking for standard shots of each of them holding their medals. After I got that specific shot with each swimmer, I quickly shifted and shot these portraits. I don’t believe they’ve been used before, but it’s an example of shooting something for yourself after you’ve got “the shot” at a shoot. For better or worse, I use a very similar lighting setup on most of my portraits. This setup was an attempt to break out of that. I hung an octabox directly above the subjects and lit them primarily while standing in front of a mostly-collapsed umbrella to try to mimic a ring flash look.

Last month as Indiana University swimmers and divers trained for the 2016 Rio Olympics, I had the opportunity to photograph a bit of their training in Bloomington. These photos were for “Beneath the Surface“, a special feature put together by IU Communications in partnership with IU Athletics.

This weekend I photographed the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships for the Drury University’s athletics department. This was my first time photographing at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of light. When I’ve photographed swimming in the past, it has always been inside of darkly-illuminated high schools. The Drury women’s team finished fourth and the men’s team finished sixth.

After a couple slow news days at the office, I got my first real taste of what it’s like to be busy in Cheyenne tonight. I had three assignments that all overlapped meaning that I could only stay 30 to 45 minutes at the first two assignments due to drive time across town. I started off with a swimming assignment on the east side of town, drove to a basketball game on the south side and finally drove back up to the east side for a dress rehearsal of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The theater is actually directly next to the school where the swim meet was earlier in the evening. In all, I put about 25 miles on my truck with the three evening assignments.
