Rock Camp concert

July 24, 2010

Today I covered the finale concert for a summer session of Rock Camp USA at Antone’s, a historic music venue in Austin. The camp is ran by the Austin School of Music as a way to encourage youngsters to play rock music together. During the two-week camp, the rockers are divided into bands. These bands pick a name, perform covers and record a demo tape in a recording studio. At the end of the session, they perform in front of parents, friends and family at Antone’s. I did an audio slideshow project on this using photos from this concert and a few that I took earlier in the week at the Austin School of Music.

Ray Benson is watching …

I covered the Peterson Brothers Band today as they performed at the Bergstrom International Airport. It was weird being in an airport not worrying about missing a flight or lugging around a suitcase. The band’s performance was kicking off kids week at the airport. Here’s a funny frame I got with a cardboard cutout of Ray Benson creeping down on Alex, the band’s bassist:

One of my goals this summer is to get more comfortable shooting lit portraits. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. I’m not perfect by any stretch, but I’m much more confident than I was two months ago when it comes to strobing someone. For most of my portraits I’m asked to do, I don’t have a lot of time to scout locations or think up ideas. In these cases, it’s an additional challenge to think up a lighting scheme, background and expression for the portrait on the fly. Such was the case with the portraits below. Luckily for me, I had a subject who was pretty open and creative and had some ideas when I arrived.

Alejandro Escovedo at Blues on the Green

My shift on Wednesday night was pretty slow so I walked over to Zilker Park and shot a few features of the evening’s headliner, Alejandro Escovedo. Escovedo was one of the musicians performing this summer at Blues on the Green, a free concert series that draws hundreds of Austinites to Zilker Park each Wednesday evening.
