In the 75th Men’s Little 500, Black Key Bulls survived a chaotic finish, avoiding a multi-team crash on lap 199 of 200 en route to the team’s third-straight victory. The pileup eliminated several leading teams from contention and opened the door for Cinzano and Bears to round out the podium. I’ve photographed 29 editions of the men’s and women’s races in 15 years. This was without a doubt the craziest finale I’ve ever seen. Presented below are a few of my photos documenting the race. This year, I also had the great pleasure of documenting the event alongside students from my Little 500 Photography class in the IU Media School. I strongly encourage you to explore their outstanding work from both races published on the Escape Collective website.

The Little 500 is more than just two days of racing. In the weeks leading up to the races each year, teams compete in the Spring Series, a set of events that includes Individual Time Trials, Miss-N-Out and Team Pursuit. Together, these events test speed, strategy and teamwork, often revealing the strongest teams in the field before the Little 500 races themselves.

A week later, it still doesn’t seem real. A week later, I’m still at a loss for words. The Indiana Hoosiers are the undefeated champions of college football. When I photographed my first IU football game 18 years ago – a 42-20 home loss to Ball State – this outcome didn’t just feel unlikely; it felt utterly unimaginable. I don’t typically photograph sports in my role at Indiana University, which made the opportunity to document this postseason run for the university administration all the more special. That run culminated in IU’s dramatic 27-21 victory over Miami in the College Football Playoff National Championship game. To witness and capture this journey from the sidelines was an incredible privilege I will never forget.

Black Key Bulls are Little 500 champions for the second-consecutive season. Following a lap 81 crash involving several contending teams, BKB and Sigma Alpha Epsilon capitalized on the opportunity and broke away from the pack. The two rivals collaborated on the track and coordinated exchanges in the pits to distance themselves from the field including a strong Cutters team. BKB made what ultimately became the winning move with 38 laps to go when Black Key Bulls rider Wiley Close and SAE’s Luke Naas headed towards their pits for another coordinated exchange. Suddenly, Close veered back onto the track and sprinted away from Naas. BKB never looked back en route to victory.
