Huntington North semistates

March 18, 2012

I spent Saturday afternoon photographing the Huntington North Class 3A and 4A semistates for the Tribune. We had a couple local teams hoping to punch tickets to the state finals, but both teams – Mishawaka Marian and Elkhart Memorial – lost. It appears I might be bad luck. The gym was dark and had a green glow about it that I can only assume was cranked up for St. Patrick’s Day. The amazing food in hospitality room left me speechless and made up for the cave-like light illuminating the gymnasium.

Carmel survived after a half-court heave at the buzzer by Elkhart Memorial fell a few feet short of the rim. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)

Pole positioning

March 16, 2012

In South Bend, the people here take St. Patrick’s Day very seriously. So seriously that I need to remind myself to check later to see if I get holiday pay for working on Saturday. On Thursday some of the preparations started for what should be a fun weekend in South Bend although I’ll be down in Huntington, Ind. shooting a couple semi-state basketball games. Alas, I will miss out on festivities such as the little leprechaun contest.

AJ Summe, of Aay's Rent-All, holds up a corner pole as he and other workers erect a 80 by 130-foot tent for downtown St. Patrick's festivities on Thursday, March 15, 2012, morning in South Bend. The tent, at 305 S. Michigan St., will feature live music, drinks and music on Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)

Waiting to work

March 13, 2012

This photo was taken as part of a series the Tribune is running profiling the plight of some unemployed folks in our area.

Indiana fires Legette-Jack

March 13, 2012

Indiana fired women’s basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack on Monday after six seasons coaching the Hoosiers. As a student at IU, I shot a lot of women’s hoops as it was a way to work your way up to men’s hoops at the Indiana Daily Student. I shot the women so much so that it contributed to my getting a C in Z301: Rock Music in the 70s & 80s. The class was on Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. – the same time as several of the women’s games. Coach Jack was fun to photograph during the games because she was always good for a reaction either good or bad depending on how the team was doing.
