Wyoming Soccer Tournament Day 2: Let it rain

May 20, 2011

Today was pretty much identical to Thursday. Rain. Rain. Rain. It never stopped. The only difference for me was a nifty pair of waterproof boots ($25 at Wal Mart) that kept my feet dry. Other than that I got soaked again. This despite a rain coat I wore over my winter jacket. I guess when it rains so hard for so long, there’s not much you can wear to keep you completely dry. I got used to the whole being wet deal and just rolled with it. Felt like I got better pictures today although the teams I shot didn’t fair very well. All the Cheyenne teams are out of contention for state titles meaning the only title games I’ll be shooting on Saturday will be for our sister paper in Laramie.

Wyoming Soccer Tournament Day 1: Miserable soggyness

May 19, 2011

Today was miserable. I shot seven different teams at the Wyoming high school soccer tournament in what seemed like a monsoon. It rained the entire day. The entire day. I’ve never been so soaked in my life. I dressed in layers of what is said to be “rainproof” clothing, but after a few hours, even rainproof clothing gets saturated. I had an hour break in the middle of the day, and I ran back to our hotel to change into dry clothes. Upon returning to the games, I was soaked again in about 30 minutes. I’m planning a Wal Mart run this evening to ensure this doesn’t happen again tomorrow.

Cheyenne Post 6 vs. Gillette baseball

May 7, 2011

I really like baseball not as a fan, but as a photographer. It’s nice to shoot. There are no poorly lit gyms, territorial cheerleaders on the sidelines or loud bands. Even better: the players never come crashing into you at full speed. Although in baseball you occasionally have to duck, dip, dive or dodge those heat-seeking foul balls that tend to come directly into the dugout. For the most part, baseball is relaxing. You have to be on your toes the entire time or you might miss a double play, which really trains you to have quick timing. The light for the evening games is almost always incredible. That helps as well. Tonight I got to shoot my first baseball game of the year, the first since working at the Austin American-Statesman last summer. Not surprisingly, I was extremely rusty today. I didn’t get that shot of a play at home plate or at second base. Instead, I shot a lot of the pitchers.
