Smoke on the steps

April 4, 2011

Things seemed to crawl a little bit today. It was a relatively slow news day so I decided to go feature hunting about mid-day rather than spend too much time at my desk. I took a swing past the capitol and noticed that workers were installing new limestone steps at the south entrance. That entrance is currently undergoing a bit of a face lift so I’ve been cruising past there every few days to see the progress. I walked up and starting taking photos outside of the orange safety fence until one of the workers (pictured below) motioned for me to come closer. I thought it was kind of a quirky scene how he was working with steps above and below.

Donald "Dog" Jones, a worker for Harold F. Johnson Masonry, grinds down a piece of stone as he and other workers prepare to install a row of limestone steps on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the south entrance to the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne. Workers are replacing most of the capitol's steps as part of a project to revitalize the capitols entrance, which has included cutting down two trees and moving a statue.

High winds flip semi truck

April 1, 2011

One thing I have quickly learned in Wyoming: it’s very windy here. I don’t mean breezy. I mean hurricane-force winds windy. I photographed an example of this on Thursday when wind gusts in the neighborhood of 57 mph flipped a semi truck along Interstate 25 between Cheyenne, Wyo. and the Colorado state line. When I got out of my truck to take a photo of the wreck, I was nearly swept into oncoming traffic by the winds.

Laramie County firefighters survey the scene of a tractor-trailer rollover Thursday near mile marker 2.5 along Interstate 25 south of Cheyenne. The Wyoming Department of Transportation's Traffic Management Center measured winds at speeds close to 57 mph at the time of the crash, police said. Police cited the driver, who was not hurt in the crash, for careless driving. I-25 from Cheyenne to the Colorado/Wyoming border also was closed in both directions to high-profile lightweight vehicles during part of the day Thursday.

Schattenspiel

March 30, 2011

While I was photographing a rehearsal of a production of “Noises Off,” I noticed an interesting series of shadows being cast on the wall by Rory Mack, who plays the actor Garry LeJeune in the play.

Cheyenne Central soccer player Christie Schiel

March 29, 2011

Here are a few frames from a photo shoot of Cheyenne Central’s Christie Schiel. Schiel was our paper’s prep athlete of the week after scoring multiple goals in a game against cross-town rival Cheyenne East on Friday evening. I had never shot a soccer portrait before, but had a couple concepts coming into the shoot. I got out to the pitch early, and had everything set up ready to go in time for the shoot thanks to help from a couple friends. The third shot was a happy accident when one of my speedlights didn’t fire.
