Henna tattooing

March 23, 2011

In the few months that I’ve been here, I’ve learned one thing: the Laramie County library in Cheyenne is awesome. It’s probably the nicest library I’ve seen and it holds a ton of events every month that are feature-worthy for the newspaper. Everyday, we have two spots in the paper for features that we must fill. Today I had to fill both spots and work the desk at night. Luckily for me, the library was holding a henna tattooing deal for teens in one of the library’s lounges. I like trying to find little moments in community events like this.

Tristan Janini, a volunteer at the library, shares a laugh with Leslie Wethington, right, as Janini paints a henna tattoo onto her hand on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Laramie County Library in Cheyenne. Several teens stopped by the library's teen lounge to get a tattoo after donating a penny to Pennies for Peace.

Dance off

March 23, 2011

Going into a charity basketball game this evening, I never thought I’d end up with a frame like this. I was pleasantly surprised at what I think was a impromptu dance off between a couple of Cheyenne East students during halftime.

Cheyenne East students Jeremiah Hunter, left, and Brittany Lawson compete in a dance off during the halftime of a charity basketball game between East coaches and the school's varsity boy's basketball players on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the school. The friendly game benefited Isaac Salas, a Cheyenne South High School wrestler who broke his neck in November.

Amongst giants

March 23, 2011

I spotted this youngster at a charity basketball game assignment tonight. The way he is sitting on the floor with the knees from the bench almost makes him look like he’s sitting amongst some giant basketball players.

Kael Lissman, age 5, peers out from a line of legs as he glances up at the scoreboard from the coaches' team bench during a charity basketball game between East coaches and the varsity boy's basketball team on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Cheyenne East High School. Secretary of the Interior Salazar announces new coal leases in Wyoming

March 22, 2011

The Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar made a stop in Cheyenne today to announce new coal leases in the state. He spoke at Cheyenne South High School. While I was waiting for the press conference to begin, I noticed that the library had topped most of its bookshelves with books about President Barack Obama. Coincidence? Doubtful.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar answers a question during a press conference announcing coal lease sales in Wyoming on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Cheyenne South High School in Cheyenne, Wyo. The tracts to be leased contain an estimated 758 million tons of low sulfur coal.
