Streets of Chicago

October 30, 2010

This weekend, I’m up in Naperville to cover the state soccer tournament. The team I’m here for, Peoria Christian, won last night and will play for the championship in a couple hours from now. Since I had the entire day to kill, I drove into downtown Chicago and wandered around with my digital camera, a 35 mm lens and a Holga for most of the day. I didn’t have any specific plans so I kind of drifted around looking for things that caught my eye. I even shot a few photos at a Richard Daley press conference (third photo) when I crossed paths with his entourage in Daley Plaza. My inspiration for the day came from one of my favorite blogs: Shooting from the Hip, by Chicago Tribune staffer Scott Strazzante. Like the blog’s author, I tried to make photos on the fly in a free-flowing manner.

Peoria Christian headed to state championship game

October 30, 2010

This weekend my editor sent me up to Naperville, Ill. to cover a local team, Peoria Christian School, in the state soccer semi-final game. I love road trips because its always nice to get out of the area and see something new. I took a kind of backward way up to Naperville from Peoria to avoid traffic, and I got to see some very beautiful countryside along the way. This trip will be especially interesting since Peoria Christian won 1-0 to advance to Saturday night’s championship game. This means I’m staying up in the Chicago area all day. I’ve got my Holga with me so I’ll have to see what I come up with in the loop.

Girl’s golf player of the year portrait

October 25, 2010

My main assignment today was a portrait of the paper’s girl’s golf player of the year. The golfer goes to school in Oneida, a town about a two hour drive from Peoria on the edge of the paper’s coverage area. Unfortunately, there isn’t a golf course nearby so the background was the main challenge. On our way into the town, the reporter spotted a sign near the town’s grain terminal that looked interesting. I wanted to show that she came from a rural community so I decided to use the area near the train tracks as the background to help illustrate this.

Iben Thuroe, a foreign exchange student from Odense, Denmark, finished tied for second in the Class 1A girl's golf tournament this year playing for Mid County as a student at ROWVA High School in Oneida. Thuroe, 18, is the Peoria Journal Star high school girl's golf player of the year.
