Beware of darkness

October 1, 2010

Beware of darkness. I’m sure George Harrison meant that in a different context other than photography, but it is good advice for photographers. Sometimes it’s just too dark to make an exposure. I was almost there photographing football at Richwoods High School in Peoria tonight. The stadium is extremely dark and, like most high schools, they waited until it was good and dark to start the game. I was shooting 1/400 second, f/4 at 3200 ISO for most of the game. This was my best shot from the game that consisted primarily of quarterback option and pitch-out plays:

Tarmac proposal

September 28, 2010

I had a special opportunity on Monday to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment for a local couple. My assignment was to photograph a local man as he proposed to his girlfriend of three years. Here’s the catch: he did it as she walked off an Air National Guard cargo plane after serving three months in Afghanistan. He hugged, kissed and presented her with a bouquet of flowers before dropping to one knee to pop the question on the tarmac. She said yes. Oftentimes as journalists, we end up covering military funerals and wars themselves so it was refreshing to be on a military base for such a happier occasion. Congratulations to Brock and Heather.
