A new perspective

May 14, 2010

One week from now, I’ll be in Salzburg, Austria. I’ll be there on vacation with my parents as part of a post-graduation/35th wedding anniversary trip. Although I’ll technically be a tourist, I’m hoping to make some images that are not typical of tourists, but are more photojournalistic in nature. This week, I took a look back on some of my photos from a 2007 trip I made to Europe when I studied abroad in Austria. I was definitely in tourist mode, but on second edit I found a few decent images from the trip:

The day I left the camera at home

May 14, 2010

Just my luck. While I was running a few errands on campus today (without my camera), I ran into the Dalai Lama. Not exactly something that happens everyday. I snapped a photo with my carry your camera with you.

All in a semester’s work

May 12, 2010

The spring semester was huge for me. As a student, I worked on several projects and shot a great variety of images for the Bloomington Herald-Times. Most of my work this semester revolved around a course I had at Indiana University. The course, Advanced Photojournalism J444, was taught by Dr. James Kelly. I highly recommend it for student photographers who want to get better. Here are a few images from my class portfolio this semester:

Master Gunnery Sgt. John Lund, a member of the Marine honor guard, listens to a memorial ceremony for Sgt. Jeremy McQueary on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at The Seasons Lodge and Conference Center in Nashville, Ind. Lund, a veteran of the Vietnam War, Gulf War and Iraqi War, folded a flag in McQueary's ceremony. McQueary, 27, was killed in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan on Feb. 18.

Preparing for Dalai Lama visit

May 9, 2010

Saturday was a very busy, but interesting day for me. It was my graduation from Indiana University-Bloomington. But before I headed to the ceremony, I shot an assignment for the Indianapolis Star. The Dalai Lama is visiting the state next week with teachings in Bloomington and Indianapolis. While he’s in Bloomington, he will be staying at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center. The Dalai Lama’s late brother started the center South of Bloomington. My task was to shoot some of the preparations at the center before his visit. While I was there, one of the dignitaries arrived, and I was able to get a few shots of his arrival (see the second to last photo).

The story of Emanon

May 7, 2010

For this year’s Little 500 race, I decided to take a different angle than usual. It was my fourth time covering the race as a student, and I wanted to try to tell the story differently. Instead of just focusing on the race-day peak action and reaction shots, I teamed up with a writer to tell the story of a single team in the race. We embedded with Emanon, a first-year independent team in the field. Emanon was formed by Alpha Tau Omega members after the school’s chapter was not allowed to compete in the race after an ethics board review and alcohol violations. I produced an audio slideshow, and fellow Herald-Times intern — and soon-to-be Chicago Tribune intern — Ryan Gregg wrote a narrative about the team.
