Environmental Science at Krueger Middle School

March 6, 2013

Earlier this week, I took a drive over to Michigan City, Ind. to hang out in a swamp with a class of sixth graders studying Environmental Science. Pretty cool, right? It was one of those somewhat rare moments as a photojournalist where you pinch yourself and ask, “Do I really get paid to do this for a living?” The pictures might not reflect my enthusiasm until you consider my usual Monday: waiting around in the office and building mugs. Walking around in the woods making pictures beats sitting in the office any day in my book. The reason I was there was to get a hands-on look at what an Environmental Science magnet school looks like for a story about a South Bend school considering becoming one.

The blind woodworker

February 25, 2013

Back in January, I spent a day hanging out with Niel Makielski. Niel is legally blind after losing his vision to macular degeneration, but has a very elaborate home woodworking shop in his basement where he works on projects ranging from watch stands to full home entertainment centers. After losing most of his vision, Niel developed a very unique and interesting workflow to allow him to accurately measure pieces of wood and find tools.

Niel Makielski
After ruining a few pieces of wood by cutting them unevenly and out of square, Niel Makielski pauses as he examines his table saw while working in his home wood shop on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, near South Bend. A warped blade was the culprit. Makielski, who is legally blind, suffers from macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in 60 and older Americans according to the National Eye Institute. Notre Dame hockey defeats Miami outdoors at Soldier Field

February 18, 2013

I had the opportunity this weekend to photograph outdoor college hockey as Notre Dame faced off with Miami (OH) at Soldier Field in Chicago. My editor asked about a month ago if I wanted to work a Sunday for this assignment and I gladly volunteered to do so. Until this game, I hadn’t shot hockey in more than two years so I expected to be rusty and out of the flow of the game a bit. After all, hockey definitely has a much different flow than football and basketball, which are the two sports I’ve covered the most in the past six months at the South Bend Tribune. It was an enjoyable experience overall and just very neat to see and photograph hockey in an outdoor setting.
