News broke this weekend that Notre Dame starting quarterback will miss the 2013 season because of what coach Brian Kelly called “poor academic judgment” in remarks to the media today. Golson won the starting job last August just before the start of the 2012 season. He went 10-1 as a starter with his only loss being the 42-14 thumping by Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Golson, a mobile quarterback, rushed for 298 yards and six touchdowns last season. This made for some photogenic moments on the field last season:
Notre Dame concluded spring practices with the annual Blue-Gold scrimmage in front of fans at Notre Dame Stadium. The scrimmage is offense verses defense with a system of scoring that reminds me of scoring on “Whose Line is it Anyway?” When the smoke cleared, the defense won … or at least I think they did.

I had the great opportunity to photograph what was so far the biggest game of my career: the BCS National Championship Game between Notre Dame and Alabama. After an unexpected, undefeated season by the Irish, they fell flat out of the gate and never really showed much life in a 42-14 loss to Alabama. From a logistics standpoint, it was the easiest game I’ve shot all season. The sidelines were easy to navigate, the workroom wasn’t cramped and the internet connection was super fast. It’s always much easier to cover a winning team, but because of the game’s lopsidedness we were able to get our photos in early without any deadline stress. It’s been a fun season photographing the Irish, especially being my first year at the South Bend Tribune.
