I had the opportunity this weekend to photograph outdoor college hockey as Notre Dame faced off with Miami (OH) at Soldier Field in Chicago. My editor asked about a month ago if I wanted to work a Sunday for this assignment and I gladly volunteered to do so. Until this game, I hadn’t shot hockey in more than two years so I expected to be rusty and out of the flow of the game a bit. After all, hockey definitely has a much different flow than football and basketball, which are the two sports I’ve covered the most in the past six months at the South Bend Tribune. It was an enjoyable experience overall and just very neat to see and photograph hockey in an outdoor setting.

For the first time in the year I’ve been at the South Bend Tribune, I finally photographed some flames. Usually when I am called out for fires, I get there just in time to see the firefighters rolling up their hoses or looking around at a smoking home. This fire, as it turned out, was one of the worst in the city of Mishawaka in several decades and by far the worst I have ever photographed.
