South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg names interim police chief

March 30, 2012

I got pulled off a morning assignment and re-routed to the mayor’s office for a news conference introducing – well, actually re-introducing – Chuck Hurley as the interim South Bend Police Department police chief. He is a former chief. This all comes after the mayor announced the resignation of the former chief, Darryl Boykins, following a federal investigation into wiretapping procedures by the police department.

South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg listens to a question during a news conference announcing deputy coroner Chuck Hurley as the interim South Bend Police Department chief on Friday, March 30, 2012, in the mayor's downtown office. Buttigieg accepted Darryl Boykins' resignation on Thursday night following a federal investigation into wiretapping practices by the department. Buttigieg said he was advised by legal council to not elaborate on the investigation, which he was made aware of in late January. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)

Penn downs LaPorte at the Cove

March 30, 2012

After what seems like months shooting basketball in dark caves known as high school gymnasiums, it was very nice to get outside for a few innings to shoot a high school game at Coveleski stadium. Need to work on my timing a bit, but I’m eager to shoot some more baseball at the Cove this summer.

Flying a kite

March 29, 2012

Lucked out and found a feature in downtown Mishawaka on my way into work on Wednesday afternoon. Really liked the quote this gentleman gave me about his kite flying hobby: “My wife’s careful not to tell me not to go fly a kite because she knows I will”

Chris Robbins flies a two-line stunt kite on a windy day on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, in Beutter Park near downtown Mishawaka. "My wife's careful not to tell me not to go fly a kite because she knows I will," he said. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)
