Cheyenne East keeper Ben Harnish

April 5, 2011

I decided to do something a little different with this week’s prep athlete of the week portrait. After photographing a soccer player outside last week, I decided to take this week’s subject in studio. The subject is the keeper so I thought I’d try to show him reaching out to save goals. Due to the confines of our  studio at the paper, I wasn’t able to get him to stretch out too far. The frame below is not a composite or a multiple exposure. It’s a 10-second exposure. After opening the shutter, I used PocketWizards to trigger three different lights with each light on a different channel to allow me to trigger them in a specific order.

In this single-exposure photo, Cheyenne East keeper Ben Harnish poses for a portrait on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in Cheyenne. Harnish is the WyoSports Cheyenne prep athlete of the week.

Smoke on the steps

April 4, 2011

Things seemed to crawl a little bit today. It was a relatively slow news day so I decided to go feature hunting about mid-day rather than spend too much time at my desk. I took a swing past the capitol and noticed that workers were installing new limestone steps at the south entrance. That entrance is currently undergoing a bit of a face lift so I’ve been cruising past there every few days to see the progress. I walked up and starting taking photos outside of the orange safety fence until one of the workers (pictured below) motioned for me to come closer. I thought it was kind of a quirky scene how he was working with steps above and below.

Donald "Dog" Jones, a worker for Harold F. Johnson Masonry, grinds down a piece of stone as he and other workers prepare to install a row of limestone steps on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the south entrance to the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne. Workers are replacing most of the capitol's steps as part of a project to revitalize the capitols entrance, which has included cutting down two trees and moving a statue.
