A moose at a quilt sale

Well I finally photographed my first moose in Wyoming … sort of. I went down to the local quilt shop looking for a feature after I noticed they were having a big sale this week. I have to admit I don’t know much about quilting, but I know my grandmother would have really enjoyed herself at the shop.

Preacher lives homeless for a week

The Rev. Rodger McDaniel took an interesting route to start his retirement. After retiring, he walked across town and checked himself into COMEA House, the local homeless shelter. McDaniel, the preacher at the Highlands United Presbyterian Church, wanted to get out of his comfort zone to start the new year so he lived as a homeless person in Cheyenne for a week. At the end of the week, he walked from the shelter across town to his church to deliver a sermon to his congregation.

Fun on the frozen lake

Today the feature hunting began. I spent a few hours at the beginning of my shift driving around some of the local parks looking for some “wild art” – a feature photo that doesn’t go with a story. I spotted a few fishermen on a frozen lake, and took several frames of them although the shots didn’t really pan out like I had expected. As I was getting ready to leave, I spotted a guy grabbing a sled out of the back of his car and asked him if he minded if I tagged along and snapped a few photos. He ended up pulling his son around for a while on the sled as I snapped away.

I’m back in the saddle. Maybe it’s more accurate to say I’m in a new saddle. Today was my first official day of work at the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle. After a whirlwind of a week including a two-day move from Peoria to Cheyenne, it is finally time to get back to picture making. My first assignment was a portrait of Carleen Williams, a 97-year-old artist who has painted some 5,000 pictures. I shot a few looks of her in front of her paintings before she asked that I come down to her basement to see more of her paintings. I immediately liked a corner where several of her paintings were sitting on the floor.
