Last weekend I had the opportunity to photograph the inaugural commencement for Wyoming Catholic College. Founded in 2005, the school is a private liberal arts school in rural Lander, Wyoming. On Saturday, May 14, the school handed out bachelor of liberal arts degrees to 30 students. I was hired to document the occasion by the college. Between a few standard podium shots and group shots, I focused mainly on in-between, candid moments during the day. Although some might categorize an assignment like this as “commercial,” I approached it like I was hired to document history. After all being that this was the school’s first commencement, it was history. I had free roam throughout the day so I wandered around before, after and during the ceremony photographing everything that I saw. Here are a few of my favorites. Saturday was the end of a couple things. It was the end of the Wyoming state soccer tournament, and it was supposed to be the end of the world. The world didn’t end, but luckily the soccer tournament did. I shot four games on Saturday including both of the Class 4A championship games for our sister paper in Laramie. Unfortunately for the folks in Laramie, both of their teams lost in the finals. The girl’s game was especially painful because it came down to penalty kicks after 90 minutes of regulation and an additional 20 minutes of overtime left the game tied at 1-1. I’m not a fan of shooting crying kids, but it’s part of the job I guess. Believe me, I’d much rather shoot a celebration photo than a dejection photo. I’m disappointed in my overall take from the tournament because I didn’t get any good features away from the games. I was so miserable with the cold and rain that I was in survival mode the entire weekend.

Today was pretty much identical to Thursday. Rain. Rain. Rain. It never stopped. The only difference for me was a nifty pair of waterproof boots ($25 at Wal Mart) that kept my feet dry. Other than that I got soaked again. This despite a rain coat I wore over my winter jacket. I guess when it rains so hard for so long, there’s not much you can wear to keep you completely dry. I got used to the whole being wet deal and just rolled with it. Felt like I got better pictures today although the teams I shot didn’t fair very well. All the Cheyenne teams are out of contention for state titles meaning the only title games I’ll be shooting on Saturday will be for our sister paper in Laramie.
