Illustrating the story

September 20, 2010

One of the fun – and by fun I mean challenging – aspects of daily newspaper photojournalism is illustrating a story that by nature isn’t very visual. While photojournalists shouldn’t be considered a service department for the rest of the newsroom, there are times when you have to illustrate something for a writer. It’s just part of the job. Such was the case today when I got sent out to find a photo to go with a story about coffee prices increasing. My editor sent me to the Sterling Family Restaurant to find people drinking coffee. The restaurant was very folksy and reminded me of a similar place in Albany, Ind. (Osborn’s Restaurant) where I would go with my grandparents to eat when I was a child. The head waitress on duty was very helpful and started pouring coffee for patrons more or less so I could take photos of her in the act. I obliged her by snapping a few frames of this, but continued to look for a more genuine, candid moment. I found one, and this was far and above my favorite frame from the take:

Martha Beaird, right, a waitress at Sterling Family Restaurant, talks with a patron after serving coffee for Rick Motsinger on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the restaurant. Recent storms in South America has driven coffee prices up about 10 percent nationwide as producers' supplies have dwindled.

George Stelluto conducts first Peoria Symphony Orchestra concert

September 18, 2010

I had the privileged this evening of photographing the Peoria Symphony Orchestra as they opened their season with a new conductor, George Stelluto. The orchestra’s public relations guy was extremely helpful, getting me back stage before the performance to get a shot of the maestro as he was preparing to walk out for his first performance with the orchestra (first and third photos). I absolutely love it when I get this kind of access, and it makes for better photos about 98 percent of the time.

George Stelluto, music director of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, waits backstage before taking the stage to conduct his first concert with the orchestra on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Peoria Civic Center. The orchestra opened with "Meistersinger Overture" by Richard Wagner.

Muddy truck

September 18, 2010

To say this is a muddy truck is a bit of an understatement. This is hands down the muddiest truck I have ever seen. When the mud is so bad it blocks your visibility forcing you to look out a window, that’s bad. This was a feature I shot out at Peoria Speedway this evening while I was working on a profile of a local driver. It rained quite a bit today making the track a sloppy mess, and this truck was one of several to take laps on the track in an effort to pack down the mud to make the track ready for the race.

Jim Patterson looks out his driver side window to see as he uses a truck to mash down mud on the track on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Peoria Speedway. Rain throughout the day made the track too sloppy for racing, forcing some drivers to use their pick ups to help dry and smooth out the track.
