Astros prospect Jordan Lyles makes Triple-A debut

August 11, 2010

My afternoon assignment on Tuesday was photographing a 19-year-old Houston Astro’s prospect who was making a Triple-A debut with the Round Rock Express. Although my single focus was on the young pitcher, I shot a few features in the ballpark and happened to catch the umpire calling a runner safe at home plate (third photo). One thing I loved about the assignment was the light. The game started at 7 p.m. with long shadows on the field that progressed as the sun set in the West. Instead of avoiding the sunlight or exposing away from it, I made some photos with an emphasis on the harsh contrast between shadow and sunlight. This is something I’ve really developed an eye for this summer. Now when I go on assignments, I often find myself looking for this.

President Barack Obama visits Austin

August 9, 2010

I got the opportunity today to photograph the presidential motorcade and Air Force One during Barack Obama’s visit to Austin. I was working in a support role to the rest of the staff today who were covering Obama’s arrival, the president’s speech at the University of Texas and crowd reactions at places in between. With such a huge news story, it was very cool to be able to contribute to the staff’s coverage, especially as an intern. While some might be disappointed that they are not photographing the speech itself, as an intern you have to be humble and be thankful that you were asked to contribute to a big news story.

Austin City Golf Championship

August 8, 2010

Photographing golf can be difficult. I love to play golf, but it’s not one of my favorite sports to photograph. Usually I’m looking for a telling moment at the end of the given tournament when the winner is celebrating or when the loser gives up the championship on the last hole. On Sunday, I followed the final pairing for their entire 18 holes. After getting a few standard shots of all the players, I got creative and looked for some interesting shots. I was especially drawn to the golf course’s openness (lack of trees around the holes) and the sky dotted with clouds.

The Alamo (again)

August 8, 2010

I went to the Alamo on Saturday for the second time during my summer in Texas. This time I went with a couple of the newsroom interns who wanted to see the sights in San Antonio. Unlike my previous trip, I didn’t shoot many frames this time. Despite this, I did capture an interesting moment between a few re-enactors who were playing 1830’s era Mexican soldiers behind the Alamo. (As a side note, check out their huge hats.)
