Dig an ice pony

January 22, 2011

Kind of reminds me of a scene from the movie “Animal House” where the janitor has to remove a dead horse from the dean’s office.

Kevin Petty carves a horse out of a block of ice using an electric chain saw during the Xtreme Ice Festival on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, in front of the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne.

Anyone for tennis?

January 21, 2011

I was leaving a tennis assignment this evening when I stopped in my tracks to make a picture of this quirky scene.

A tennis racket bars the door leading to a court as the University of Wyoming takes on Mesa State on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at the Frontier Park Tennis Complex in Cheyenne.

Flight canceled?

January 19, 2011

Airline passengers aren't the only ones susceptible to flight cancellations this winter season as a flock of more than a hundred Canadian Geese sit grounded in the snow on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, in a field at Lions Park. The geese typically fly South in winter, but some geese take up permanent residence at parks and golf courses, according to National Geographic.

A moose at a quilt sale

January 18, 2011

Well I finally photographed my first moose in Wyoming … sort of. I went down to the local quilt shop looking for a feature after I noticed they were having a big sale this week. I have to admit I don’t know much about quilting, but I know my grandmother would have really enjoyed herself at the shop.

Brenda Salverson, owner of the Quilted Corner, emerges from behind a quilt covering the entryway to her office on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at the downtown store. The store is selling 30 machine and hand-made quilts from local quilter Sarah May Robinson through Jan. 22.

Fun on the frozen lake

January 13, 2011

Today the feature hunting began. I spent a few hours at the beginning of my shift driving around some of the local parks looking for some “wild art” – a feature photo that doesn’t go with a story. I spotted a few fishermen on a frozen lake, and took several frames of them although the shots didn’t really pan out like I had expected. As I was getting ready to leave, I spotted a guy grabbing a sled out of the back of his car and asked him if he minded if I tagged along and snapped a few photos. He ended up pulling his son around for a while on the sled as I snapped away.
