This year I have been struck by the visual oddness of the COVID-19 crisis. This pandemic is forcing us to reimagine things we used to take for granted like going to the movies. IU Cinema got creative and used the university’s empty football stadium to screen Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1988 masterpiece, “Cinema Paradiso.” The screening was also the final public event for IU Cinema’s founding director Jon Vickers. It’s been a great pleasure for me to work with Jon over the years photographing IU Cinema’s various events. The event was a fitting send-off and a rare opportunity for members of the IU community to gather amidst the pandemic.

Last month, I photographed six Indiana University commencement ceremonies on five different campuses in a span of seven days. It was a whirlwind of a week, but the ceremonies feature some of the best moments we capture all year for the university. Here is a selection of my favorite moments from the ceremonies I photographed:

This summer has been a new experience for me. As a student, I never experienced a full summer in Bloomington. Now, as a townie, I’ve gotten the chance to see Bloomington and the Indiana University campus in all its blooming, laid-back glory. In a few weeks, that’ll all change when students start arriving en masse, but I’ve enjoyed the summer thus far. My photoshoots at IU have decreased considerably the last couple months, but it’s a welcome change of pace after the graduation season in May. Here are a few favorites from my daily work on assignment for Indiana University Communications:

Earlier this month, I photographed six Indiana University commencement ceremonies in a five-day span. For me, these graduations are the most important IU shoots I will have all year. While these photos may be used on social media, marketing materials and websites in the short-term, I approach the graduations as a chance to document the long-term history of the university. It was a whirlwind of a week, but a lot of fun to have the opportunity to make pictures at various IU campuses around the state. Here is a selection of my favorite moments from the ceremonies I photographed:
