Sunburst Races

For the third year in a row, I was assigned to photograph the annual Sunburst Races in South Bend. The Sunburst Races are South Bend’s marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races, which draw thousands of people to our city each year. It’s a fun assignment because there are thousands of moments to be had. That said, it’s quite a grind of a day. The marathon starts at 6 a.m. meaning I usually wake up at 4:45 a.m. to get to the starting line by no later than 5:30 a.m. In my experience shooting the races, I’ve always been the sole shooter. This puts a lot of pressure on me to shoot a variety of features and action all the while getting the winners of the races for our sports section. I really got sick of shooting similar photos at the start and finish lines the last couple years so I decided to try something different. This year I ditched my car, grabbed a couple of easy-to-carry lenses (Canon 135 mm f/2 and 35 f/1.4) and rode my bike along the course. This allowed me to shoot a bit of the action along the course itself, but kept me from getting stuck at a race roadblock in a car.

Sunburst

Photographing a race like the Sunburst involves a lot of running, but not the kind of actual running the participants are engaging it. It involves a lot of running around from point to point in a car. This was my situation on Saturday morning. I woke up at 4:45 a.m. so I could be in downtown South Bend before the 6 a.m. start of the marathon. I positioned my car on a specific block near the starting line so that I could leave without encountering blocked roads on my way to the finishing line at the University of Notre Dame. After shooting the start of the marathon, 5K and half marathon in downtown, I jumped in my car and sped over to Notre Dame Stadium to try to catch winners. Shooting a race that finishes in a different location than where it starts can be hectic for one person, but luckily I had a logistical plan going in having photographed it for the first time last year.

Ferry unveiled a sign asking her to marry him as he ran the final 50 yards of the race on the football field. She said yes. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)

Cross country sportrait

My second assignment of the evening was to photograph a local cross country runner for an upcoming feature. I’ve shot a few sportraits in my day, but never one of a runner. One of the main challenges was location. I met her and the reporter at the high school and while she was doing a short interview, I scouted a few shots within walking distance of the main entrance of the school. If this had been a track runner, I would have been automatically drawn to the school’s track, but cross country presents a bigger challenge for the background. The school is near a busy highway so I settled on a running shot next to the school’s brick exterior for the sake of a clean background. Ideally, I would have liked to have an open field or a forest to shoot in, but this was the best background I could find on the fly. I had her run towards a Nikon SB-800 (1/8 power, zoomed to 24 mm) while I added a bit of fill with a Nikon SB-600 at a 45 degree behind her (1/4 power, zoomed to 24 mm). I had a sort of sweet spot between the lights, and it took a few passes for me to catch her in the lights.
