Fifth graders learn about government at the Wyoming State Capitol

April 27, 2011

Micaela Heigis, left, points to a belt that she didn't like as part of Katie Mugg's outfit as a conference committee of fifth graders from Arp Elementary debate a bill dress code for teachers on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, on the floor of the House chambers in the Wyoming State Capitol. The youngsters passed a dress code for Mugg, a tutor at the school, and each change represented an amendment to the bill. The overall dress coded failed to pass because the fifth graders on the House side didn't like Mugg's orange safety vest.

March 25, 2011

While I was feature hunting today, I stopped by the Wyoming State Capitol to photograph renovations taking place on the South entrance. I ended up inside looking for a window to shoot out of downwards. I noticed that the Senate gallery door was open so I stepped inside to see if maybe a janitor might be inside. Instead, I spotted one of the senators working quietly at his desk.

Sen. Floyd Esquibel, D-Cheyenne, works at his desk alone on Friday, March 25, 2011, in the Senate chambers at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne.

Wyoming Legislature ends session

March 4, 2011

Today was the last day of the 2011 session of the 61st Wyoming Legislature. Covering the legislature twice a week has really become part of my weekly routine since I started at the paper here in January so it will be a bit weird not having to dress up in a suit. It was kind of a weird mood among the legislators today. It kind of seemed like the last day of elementary school. Everyone was cleaning out desks. I kept wondering if I’d spot someone signing a yearbook.

Leland Christensen, R-Alta, as the senators take a break while they wait for two bills to make their way from the House to the Senate during the last day of the 61st Legislature's session on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne.
