Alone in the Senate

March 25, 2011

While I was feature hunting today, I stopped by the Wyoming State Capitol to photograph renovations taking place on the South entrance. I ended up inside looking for a window to shoot out of downwards. I noticed that the Senate gallery door was open so I stepped inside to see if maybe a janitor might be inside. Instead, I spotted one of the senators working quietly at his desk.

Sen. Floyd Esquibel, D-Cheyenne, works at his desk alone on Friday, March 25, 2011, in the Senate chambers at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne.

District superintendent teaches kindergarten class

March 24, 2011

Aspen Rewerts, right, a kindergarten student at Jessup Elementary, reacts before hugging Mark Stock, superintendent of Laramie County School District No. 1, after Stock checked her work before recess on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the school. Stock was teaching in place of Kathleen Blaes-Garcia for the day after Blaes-Garcia won a contest for donating to the Cheyenne School Foundation. "It's been refreshing," said Stock, who taught third and sixth graders for eight years before becoming an administrator.

Henna tattooing

March 23, 2011

In the few months that I’ve been here, I’ve learned one thing: the Laramie County library in Cheyenne is awesome. It’s probably the nicest library I’ve seen and it holds a ton of events every month that are feature-worthy for the newspaper. Everyday, we have two spots in the paper for features that we must fill. Today I had to fill both spots and work the desk at night. Luckily for me, the library was holding a henna tattooing deal for teens in one of the library’s lounges. I like trying to find little moments in community events like this.

Tristan Janini, a volunteer at the library, shares a laugh with Leslie Wethington, right, as Janini paints a henna tattoo onto her hand on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Laramie County Library in Cheyenne. Several teens stopped by the library's teen lounge to get a tattoo after donating a penny to Pennies for Peace.

Dance off

March 23, 2011

Going into a charity basketball game this evening, I never thought I’d end up with a frame like this. I was pleasantly surprised at what I think was a impromptu dance off between a couple of Cheyenne East students during halftime.

Cheyenne East students Jeremiah Hunter, left, and Brittany Lawson compete in a dance off during the halftime of a charity basketball game between East coaches and the school's varsity boy's basketball players on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the school. The friendly game benefited Isaac Salas, a Cheyenne South High School wrestler who broke his neck in November.
