Swimming, basketball and a streetcar named desire

January 19, 2011

After a couple slow news days at the office, I got my first real taste of what it’s like to be busy in Cheyenne tonight. I had three assignments that all overlapped meaning that I could only stay 30 to 45 minutes at the first two assignments due to drive time across town. I started off with a swimming assignment on the east side of town, drove to a basketball game on the south side and finally drove back up to the east side for a dress rehearsal of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The theater is actually directly next to the school where the swim meet was earlier in the evening. In all, I put about 25 miles on my truck with the three evening assignments.

A moose at a quilt sale

January 18, 2011

Well I finally photographed my first moose in Wyoming … sort of. I went down to the local quilt shop looking for a feature after I noticed they were having a big sale this week. I have to admit I don’t know much about quilting, but I know my grandmother would have really enjoyed herself at the shop.

Preacher lives homeless for a week

January 16, 2011

The Rev. Rodger McDaniel took an interesting route to start his retirement. After retiring, he walked across town and checked himself into COMEA House, the local homeless shelter. McDaniel, the preacher at the Highlands United Presbyterian Church, wanted to get out of his comfort zone to start the new year so he lived as a homeless person in Cheyenne for a week. At the end of the week, he walked from the shelter across town to his church to deliver a sermon to his congregation.

Fun on the frozen lake

January 13, 2011

Today the feature hunting began. I spent a few hours at the beginning of my shift driving around some of the local parks looking for some “wild art” – a feature photo that doesn’t go with a story. I spotted a few fishermen on a frozen lake, and took several frames of them although the shots didn’t really pan out like I had expected. As I was getting ready to leave, I spotted a guy grabbing a sled out of the back of his car and asked him if he minded if I tagged along and snapped a few photos. He ended up pulling his son around for a while on the sled as I snapped away.
