On the road

February 1, 2012

In the midst of a 13-hour road trip from Wyoming to Indiana on Tuesday, boredom set in. This happened despite my best efforts to keep myself occupied with a iPod playlist of the entire Beatles discography. (Might have sung along to most of the 226 songs – naturally excluding “Revolution 9” – between North Platte, Neb. and my hotel in Peru, Ill.) At a certain point midway through Nebraska, I decided to play around with my new favorite Android camera phone app: Vignette. Here are a couple random camera phone musings from my 895-mile journey:

Thankful Thursday

January 27, 2012

Alf Grzegorczyk, owner of the Red Wood Lounge, shares a laugh with a patron as he hands out bracelets for Thankful Thursday on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at the Cheyenne lounge. The weekly gathering has raised more than $100,000 for charities since it started on Feb. 11, 2010, through 50/50 drawing and auctions. "It's such a cool program," Grzegorczyk said of the weekly event (held at 4:30 p.m. each Thursday except in the summer and on holidays) that benefits a different charity each week. Thursday's event was in benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of Cheyenne. (James Brosher/Wyoming Tribune Eagle)

Randall Terry campaigns in Cheyenne

January 25, 2012

Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry campaigns on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, outside of the downtown Cheyenne Starbucks. Terry is planning to air graphic anti-abortion television ads during this year's Super Bowl in several states, and hopes to split enough support for President Barack Obama among evangelicals and Catholics to unseat the president. "I think history will record that during the general election I will cause the defeat of Barack Obama," he said. (James Brosher/Wyoming Tribune Eagle)

Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra conductor William Intriligator

January 22, 2012

In early November, I had the opportunity to spend some time photographing William Intriligator, the music director and conductor for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, as he prepared for a concert featuring violin soloist Miriam Fried. The photos were for a “day in the life” type of story so I spent time with the conductor back stage before and during a rehearsal for the performance. It was pretty amazing to get the opportunity to hear Fried perform pieces from the Brahms Violin Concerto to absolute perfection on her first attempt as she had an informal meeting with Intriligator before a full-orchestra rehearsal.

Fried, who lives in Boston, severed as the soloist for "A Classic Encounter," a concert that included the Brahms Violin Concerto, Mozart's Overture to "The Marriage of Figaro" and Sibelius Symphony No. 5.
