The day of the cow at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair

July 24, 2012

My paper was in need of A1 wild art again today so I was able to convince my editor to let me drive over to Goshen, Ind. for the Elkhart County Fair. The fair is one of the largest county fairs in the country so I figured I might be able to get something out of it. It just so happened that today was the big 4-H dairy show.

Karina Kern, 10, of Goshen, reacts as she hoses down her holstein dairy feeder calf, Dude, during the Elkhart County 4-H Fair on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, in Goshen, Ind. Kern is showing for her second year in 4-H, but is a fourth-generation participant. Many 4-Hers and their cows filled the stalls on Tuesday afternoon as they prepared for the day's dairy show competitions. (James Brosher/South Bend Tribune)

Mishawaka Horseshoe Pitching Club

July 22, 2012

I had the opportunity last week to photograph a very neat assignment: a group of old-timers who gather weekly to pitch horseshoes in Mishawaka. More than it’s a competition, it’s a social event for the folks who trek from as far as Edwardsburg, Mich. to partake in the pitching. I really enjoy shooting community assignments like this. Often I don’t have much time to spend at an assignment, but luckily I was able to spend some time talking with and photographing the club members. This was probably one of my favorite assignments of the year.

Julia Frick

April 4, 2012

A couple weeks back, I photographed Julia Frick, a local women who adopted two children she had cared for as a foster parent. The images were part of the Tribune’s ongoing investigation and coverage of the Indiana Department of Child Services.
