The annual Potpourri of the Arts concert showcases ensembles at the Indiana University African American Arts Institute. Since 1993, the shows have embodied the spirit of African American performance at IU AAAI via its three ensembles: the African American Dance Company, the African American Choral Ensemble and the IU Soul Revue.

Without fail since I first arrived in Bloomington as a student in 2006, I have somehow always managed to be out of town the weekend of the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival. Usually the festival falls during James Dean Weekend when I’m out of town at the Ducktail Run in Gas City, Indiana. This year, however, the festival was a weekend later and I finally had my first opportunity to attend and photograph Lotus. I experienced a sliver of what is a very expansive and beautiful collection of world music and art. Now as a card-carrying Bloomington townie, I’m looking forward to photographing the festival more extensively in the years to come.

Back in the summer, I was tasked with showing Indiana University’s iconic Student Building clock tower in a new way for an IU Communications project. I lucked out and happened upon this beautiful evening. This photo was actually an outtake. It was a shot I wanted to get just before landing the drone, but it ended up being my favorite from the entire shoot. It’s an example of shooting something for myself just for the sake of personal creativity after I’ve gotten “the shot” the client wants.

This was my first year photographing the IUPUI Regatta. Established in 2009, the event is a half-mile canoe relay competition on the Canal Walk in downtown Indianapolis. My primary assignment was to capture drone stills and video footage, but I had the opportunity to capture a few photos from the ground level before driving back to Bloomington to cover an afternoon assignment later in the day.
