Red Bull RedBud National motocross

July 8, 2012

I spent most of my Saturday at work photographing motocross racing at RedBud in Buchanan, Mich. I have to admit that I don’t know much about motocross so the entire event was extremely new to me. I shot the same race three years ago for the Tribune as an intern, but luckily I was much more prepared this time than my previous experience. I really liked photographing at RedBud. The track officials were extremely friendly and didn’t harass photographers and scrutinize their every move (I’m look at you, Indianapolis Motor Speedway “yellow shirts”). This made it easy to move around and look for different shots during the races. Unfortunately, I had a battery die on my 1D Mark III as I was in the middle of the first race, leaving me only with a 5D and a 7D to shoot the second race.

Chicago

July 8, 2012

I spent a couple of days last week with my girlfriend in Chicago on a much-needed vacation. I’ve been to Chicago a few times mostly on business so it was nice to go just purely for fun. We visited the Lincoln Park Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier and Second City: all places I’ve never been in Chicago. It was a nice way to unwind from a very stressful month of work in June and find some visual inspiration along with way.

The skinny dream

July 2, 2012

For the past 10 months, the South Bend Tribune photo staff has been documenting the journey of a local woman, Kimmie Trethewey, who underwent bariatric surgery. My predecessor at the Tribune, Marcus Marter, shot a great deal of the story in the early stages, and I’ve had the opportunity to photograph Kimmie the past few months. The story is currently running in the paper as a series so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite frames of Kimmie.

WWII on the shores of Lake Michigan

July 1, 2012

Had the opportunity to spend the day on the beach Saturday photographing a WWII re-enactment in nearby St. Joseph, Mich. As a history buff, I’ve been looking forward to this assignment since I moved back to South Bend in January. I photographed this re-enactment in 2009 as a Tribune intern, and it was one of the most fun assignments I had that summer. Such was also the case on Saturday. I got sand all over me along with my cameras and lenses (don’t tell my boss), but it was worth it.

Last week, Terry Sturgis was sentenced to 140 years for the murder of his 10-year-old son.
