Princeton, Indiana basketball standout Jackie Young

April 6, 2016

Jackie Young is arguably the best basketball player – boys or girls – in the state of Indiana. I had the opportunity to photograph her for an ALL USA TODAY basketball player of the year candidate feature last week. It became clear how good she is as soon as I walked into the high school and saw her game jerseys framed on the wall outside of the gym. She doesn’t graduate until the end of May. In January, she broke Indiana’s all-time high school scoring record previously held by Damon Bailey. Next season she will play at Notre Dame.

I had not shot a “sportrait” (sports portrait) in a while. This assignment reminded me of a weekly feature we would shoot in Wyoming featuring high school athletes called “Prep Athlete of the Week” where we would conceptualize and photograph a sportrait on the fly. A special thanks to Princeton athletics director Jason Engelbrecht and girls basketball coach Charles Mair who were awesome and went out of their way to help me get everything set up for the shoot.

Dr. Pardeep Kumar

October 7, 2015

Last month I photographed Dr. Pardeep Kumar, an internist in Terre Haute, Ind., for a story in The New York Times about a new medical coding system that went into effect on Oct. 1. The new system, ICD-10, is causing health care providers anxiety because it will change the fundamental way they describe illnesses and injuries in their computer systems. As Dr. Michael R. Marks, a Connecticut orthopedic surgeon, describes it in the story: “On Oct. 1, we will be speaking a new language. It’s like switching to German, after speaking English for 30 years.”

Summer at Indiana University

July 24, 2015

This summer has been a new experience for me. As a student, I never experienced a full summer in Bloomington. Now, as a townie, I’ve gotten the chance to see Bloomington and the Indiana University campus in all its blooming, laid-back glory. In a few weeks, that’ll all change when students start arriving en masse, but I’ve enjoyed the summer thus far. My photoshoots at IU have decreased considerably the last couple months, but it’s a welcome change of pace after the graduation season in May. Here are a few favorites from my daily work on assignment for Indiana University Communications:
