Princeton, Indiana basketball standout Jackie Young
Jackie Young is arguably the best basketball player – boys or girls – in the state of Indiana. I had the opportunity to photograph her for an ALL USA TODAY basketball player of the year candidate feature last week. It became clear how good she is as soon as I walked into the high school and saw her game jerseys framed on the wall outside of the gym. She doesn’t graduate until the end of May. In January, she broke Indiana’s all-time high school scoring record previously held by Damon Bailey. Next season she will play at Notre Dame.
I had not shot a “sportrait” (sports portrait) in a while. This assignment reminded me of a weekly feature we would shoot in Wyoming featuring high school athletes called “Prep Athlete of the Week” where we would conceptualize and photograph a sportrait on the fly. A special thanks to Princeton athletics director Jason Engelbrecht and girls basketball coach Charles Mair who were awesome and went out of their way to help me get everything set up for the shoot.
Michigan dominates Indiana as Carol Hutchins becomes all-time winningest coach in NCAA softball history
This weekend I had the opportunity to document history for the University of Michigan as its softball coach Carol Hutchins captured her 1,458th career win to become the all-time winningest coach in NCAA softball history. No. 2 Michigan dominated Indiana on an extremely windy day in Bloomington to win 8-0 in five innings.

NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships
This weekend I photographed the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships for the Drury University’s athletics department. This was my first time photographing at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of light. When I’ve photographed swimming in the past, it has always been inside of darkly-illuminated high schools. The Drury women’s team finished fourth and the men’s team finished sixth.

Penn defeats Columbus North for first state championship
I photographed the Penn girls basketball team last night as they faced Columbus North for the IHSAA Class 4A state championship. The game was a freelance gig for my former employer, the South Bend Tribune. It was a cool experience to see a few familiar faces in the media room and on the court. Penn won 68-48, capturing the school’s first state championship.
